Diesel Fuel Saving Flow Meters for Work Boats

Posted in GPI News by GPI on November 3, 2009

Flow Meter Application:

Determining fuel used for generating power on work boats reduces the amount of taxes owed. Additionally, accurate data about motor performance can pinpoint efficiency problems resulting in fuel savings. When fuel prices soar this cost savings increases, creating a demand for an accurate system to determine “net use.” The GPI GM005 meter combined with the GX500 provides a “green” solution for reducing fuel used in work boats.

Flow Meter Problem:

Fuel use on work boats determines the tax paid on fuel. Fuel used for generating power is not taxed. Until recently, boat captains had no way to accurately determine the amount of fuel used for generating power. Estimating this difference often resulted in overpayment of taxes. Determining accurate net use, helps compare efficiency between boat engines. Adjustments can then result in additional fuel savings.

Flow Meter Solution:

GPI’s GM005 combined with the GX500 provides an accurate way to measure net use. One GM005 and GX500 is installed on the supply line with a second pair installed on the return line. This system allows an operator to compare fuel consumption versus speed and achieve the most efficient use of fuel. Reducing fuel costs, tax relief and “green” benefits result by using the GPI “net use” method.

How flow meters are used in different applications

Posted in GPI News by GPI on March 2, 2009

Have you ever wondered in what type of applications flow meters are being used? I know I have because of my personal lack of experience and knowledge of what a flow meter can do. I am the “web guy” so I am in charge of getting the web site looking pretty and current. I am a geek with a creative side that until a few months ago had never heard of a flow meter in my life. I didn’t know that there was more than one type or that you could measure different liquids with them. All I knew was computer geek this and computer geek that.

I believe that I have learned a few things since I have been at my current position about the internet and about flow meters in general. I read a lot of this technical data dealing with flow rates, 4-20mA (I didn’t know that existed), remote displays versus local displays and more of what I like to call “flow meter jargon.” In my journey of learning more about these flow meters I asked a lot questions to different people on how flow meters are used so that I could get a mental picture. I have a pretty crazy imagination so in my brain things looked like an Andy Warhol painting with flow meters and pipes connecting from one to the other like the checkers in a connect four game. I told you my imagination was crazy.

In order to understand more of this flow meter jargon I began to go to training with the GPI flow meter sensei, Matt Logan. I have learned a lot in the short time that I have been here and I hope it continues so that I can catch any mistakes on our web site (or if you do please let us know!). The trouble with all this knowledge is that I probably can only envision a few flow meter applications. In order to really get a visual and a scenario of how they are used I started to look at the GPI flow meter application sheets. I found the information very helpful and thought about all those other geeks like me that are looking for information about how flow meters are used.

After talking to the self-proclaimed Dr. Genius of GPI, Marque Peer, we decided to launch an informational flow meter applications web site. We hope you find the information helpful and we would love to hear from you on the site, flow meters and anything else that you have on your mind.
